Description
1985. On a dazzlingly bright Southern California summer day, during a hiking photo expedition around West Hollywood, I stopped to visit an art gallery on La Cienega Boulevard. About to enter, with a squinting bright sun directly overhead, my eye was drawn to the long south wall of the gallery, and the adjoining narrow paved drive leading to the parking area at the rear of the building. From the pavement level to the roof line of this one story structure, the wall was so thoroughly covered with a growth of Bambusa "Lady Finger" Bamboo plants that the wall itself was virtually invisible. Standing back several feet from this growth, I noticed this wonderful diagonally symmetric line, nearly luminescent, emerging into the direct sunlight from the deep background shadows cast by the nearly perfectly vertical angle of the sunlight; though visual, creating an almost sculpturally three dimensional 'base relief' impression that was irresistible. This is a sepia toned version of the original black and white image.
